Denji, an extremely poor kid lives with his devil dog Pochita killing demons and doing odd jobs for the yakuza. His dad passed away with tons of debt which now Denji was stuck to pay, possibly for life. Denji’s life takes turn for the worse when the yakuza betrays him, murdering him in the process. His dog Pochita forms a contract and, he’s revived again as Chainsaw Man; Half Human and Half Devil. He never dreamed of a remarkable life, just good food and maybe a girlfriend and now he’s a half-devil, right after his transformation, he’s quickly recruited by Makima to join the Public Safety Devil Hunters under the threat of extermination now that he’s technically a devil. How will he survive in a world which hates devils?

Denji and Demon slaying

When you talk about a fulfilling manga or, anime the first things which come to your mind is a good plot and probably a satisfying end. The journey which it takes you through matters as well because nobody wants to witness a sloppy product and characters need to be likable, There are a lot of things which determine the quality of the anime or manga or to be honest anything you find entertaining, books, movies, shows and so on

Chainsaw man is one such show which kinda keeps you entertained yet confused if it’s a guilty pleasure or the content is good, devils and shonen are like a common combo. This has been done so many times and in different scenarios as well. When chainsaw man’s anime was announced Fujimoto himself sarcastically said it was a ripoff of jujutsu kaisen which is somewhat understandable, the premise is almost the same. Chainsaw man had some beautiful panels and was gaining traction amongst fans so, I decided to check it out and for a good 30 chapters, I didn’t find the appeal which everybody else was so attracted to. It was a tad more gore-y than general shonen mangas moreover the humour was alright nothing too mind-blowing, Yet chainsaw man kept me hooked almost every chapter and made me come back to it as soon as I got the free time. I binged it in 2 days, absolutely couldn’t stop reading it, and that’s when it clicked. Chainsaw man slowly yet steady adds in all the flavours you’d like in a perfect shonen show. A good villain, likeable side characters, an mc which stands out and of course waifus..a lot of them

Fujimoto does this thing where all the chapters are so standard and have like the most subpar manga art you’d see and then randomly he adds the most expressive, crazy manga panel out of nowhere, I love it. At its heart chainsaw man is just like any other thing you have seen but still maintains certain freshness, it’s like a more easygoing Tokyo ghoul. I’m surprised all that blood and fanservice was accepted in WSJ. Thankfully, He’s shifting to Jump+ for part 2
We follow Denji as he slowly transforms from a childish, small-minded individual to somebody everyone can rely on. This change is noticeable as he continues to form bonds with his teammates and understands relationships, as somebody who never had anyone he begins to see people in a different light. This is supported with a story which first seemed to be shallow and then, later on, develops quite interestingly.
The gun devil is one of the most important characters in the show who is introduced midway through, he also acts as a pivotal character in some way, my favourite panel is also from one of the chapters he is present in. Everybody is battling their problems and little by little the entire division join hands to fight one major enemy or that’s what we are made to think.

Each devil’s powers are unique and their strengths is determined by fear, there is also a particular arc where we visit Hell and meet with the original demons and get close to understanding how devils work. This manga has a lot of potential and it’s popularity is just climbing, the anime adaptation if done right, can be one of the biggest things out this year. I trust MAPPA and I hope they keep up with the good work that they’re doing with JJK and AoT

If you haven’t read chainsaw man then please take out some time off your day and get to reading it, It’s just about 95 chapters long and is a very easy read. It will get crazier as it returns back with it’s next part and you might get a chance to witness the greatness in making.

Conclusion

That is the end of my review, I absolutely ran through chainsaw man. I was at it in the bathroom, while eating, right before sleeping like those 2 days were hazy for me. I didn’t expect to read it but thought lets just do it, I had a feeling that it’s adaptation would be weak as even Tokyo ghoul was sort of in the same genre and it was done very poorly.

I’m looking forward to the next part and more works from fujimoto sensei in the future.

I plan to start evangelion and right now I’m reading great teacher onizuka, and so far it’s hilarious. Expect some bomb reviews soon hehe

Also here’s to a good year to everyone, 2021 better be amazing.
